Anon brings together works by Abdul Abdullah, Ryan Boserio, Sally Bourke, Iain Dean, India Mark, Loribelle Spirovski, Richard Healy, Neva Hosking, Kim Hyunji, Shannon McCulloch, Andy Quilty, and Nic Plowman. The exhibition examines the diverse ways contemporary Australian artists are experimenting with the portrait genre through the medium of paint.
Invited to explore the potential of the anonymous subject, each artist offers a unique interpretation of anonymity—whether through depictions of the unknown, the unknowable, or the rendered unrecognisable. In moving beyond the celebration of prominent social figures or personal acquaintances, as so often dictated by the criteria of portrait prizes nationwide, Anon positions portraiture as a space for deeper artistic inquiry. Here, the human figure becomes a point of reference for exploring complex and layered themes, inviting audiences to consider identity, perception, and the ways in which meaning can be constructed—or concealed—within painted form.
